Spain's Raventos Codorniu family has made wine since 1551.
Artesa is Catalan for handcrafted. The family opened this Carneros hilltop in 1991 as Codorniu Napa, then committed to still Pinot and Chardonnay under the Artesa name. Paula Borgo, Director of Winemaking since 2023, came from Bodega Septima in Mendoza, the family's Argentine house. She is the second woman to hold the chair. The 2022 Estate Pinot was harvested under Ana Diogo-Draper, who led the cellar from 2015 until mid-2023.

About 150 acres of estate vineyard wrap the hill above San Pablo Bay. Fog and wind slow the ripening curve, so Pinot keeps acidity, floral lift, and a savory edge. The 2022 is 100 percent Pinot Noir, hand-harvested through September, a four-day cold soak, then eight months in French oak with only 10 percent new wood. 14.2 percent alcohol. This is the estate bottling, not a reserve block.

Paula Borgo grew up in Mendoza in a wine family and studied enology at INTA. She worked harvests at Bodega Dona Paula in Argentina and Kendall-Jackson in California, then joined Bodega Septima, the Raventos Codorniu estate in Mendoza, in 2002. She became assistant winemaker in 2008 and later head of the cellar.
In 2023 she moved to Artesa as Director of Winemaking, the second woman to hold that chair after Ana Diogo-Draper. The official house note is that she arrived with a food-science degree, an MBA in wine-business management, and more than a decade running Septima. She is the current steward of this Carneros Pinot program.
The photograph on this page is Paula in the estate vines. The 2022 Estate Pinot Noir was harvested before she arrived. Ana Diogo-Draper, a Portuguese agronomist who had worked with Mark Beringer, made that vintage. Paula now leads the house. The wine you are selling is still that Carneros hilltop Pinot: red fruit, silk, a savory bay-wind edge.

Artesa sits at 1345 Henry Road on a Carneros hilltop, a modern buried winery with a white pyramid entrance, reflecting pools, and estate Pinot and Chardonnay around the slope. The Raventos Codorniu family chose the site in the 1980s for the same cool-climate brief they knew from Catalonia: wind, fog, and a long season.
The winery opened in 1991 as a sparkling project. By 1997 the house had renamed itself Artesa and committed to still wines from Carneros and Napa. About 150 acres of estate vineyard wrap the hill, matched block by block to soil, slope, and sun. Pinot and Chardonnay are the natural fit.
The 2022 Estate Pinot is that brief in a glass: 100 percent Pinot, a four-day cold soak, eight months in French oak with 10 percent new wood. Serve it as the Carneros Pinot on the list, not as a collector speech.

The winery points to plum, strawberry, cranberry, and rose on the nose, then raspberry, blueberry, red cherry, and sandalwood. James Suckling (91, June 2025) kept it lifted and focused: red cherries, pomegranate, dried herbs, subtle oak, smooth tannins, bright acidity, a clean midweight finish. Drink now. Wine Enthusiast (90) found bright red fruits with a savory core of wild herbs and silken tannin. Those are critic notes, not a Wine-Searcher aggregate, though Wine-Searcher also shows 91 from that one Suckling review. Midweight, 14.2 percent alcohol. Serve 55 to 58 F. Open 15 minutes.
