Why this bottle belongs on the list
Two selling points.
Then the market.
Jay Buoncristiani is Wine Spectator's Rising Star of Napa Cabernet.
Jay started as enologist at The Hess Collection, then winemaker there at 26. Wine Spectator named him Rising Star of Napa Cabernet. Robert Parker called a Buoncristiani wine truly magnificent. He grafted Terra del Cuore to Malbec when others said the grape would not sell, then built this Proprietary Red as Cabernet, Syrah, and Malbec with a Napa twist. Felix Patland, Cal Poly enology, studied under Jay for five years and now leads the cellar. The 2022 still drinks as Jay's house blend.
Three named vineyards. Three hundred eighteen cases.
The 2022 is 61 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, 14 percent Malbec, 13 percent Syrah, 8 percent Merlot, and 4 percent Petit Verdot from Stagecoach, Patland Oaknoll, and Viking. Stagecoach is mountain fruit on the southern edge of Pritchard Hill. Oaknoll sits on Silverado Trail. Twenty months in French oak, 60 percent new. This is not a leftover cuvee. It is the house blend, bottled at 318 cases.

The buyer's perspective
What the guest
hears first.
James Suckling (92, June 2025) called it ripe and plush: blackberry liqueur, cassis, cocoa, cloves, vanilla, smooth tannin, chocolate and spice on the close. Staff can sell it in one sentence: Patland's small-production Proprietary Red, Stagecoach fruit, pour it with a coffee-rubbed steak.

Henry
and Olga Patland
Henry immigrated from Ukraine in 1978. He and Olga raised three sons, Michael, Felix, and Kevin, in the Bay Area while Henry built a Silicon Valley company and Olga worked in publishing. They kept looking for a Napa property that felt like a home, not a showpiece.
In 2007 they bought Terra del Cuore, Land of the Heart, on Soda Canyon Road. The first wines released in 2010. Proprietary Red was among the first three wines the house ever bottled. Michael still presents it. Felix, after Cal Poly and five years under Jay Buoncristiani, now leads the cellar.
The photograph on this page is Henry and Olga on the estate, looking toward the valley. The 2022 Proprietary Red is still their family blend: Cabernet for the frame, Syrah and Malbec for plush dark fruit, a Napa red you do not have to save for a decade.

The estate
Terra del Cuore, then Stagecoach.
Terra del Cuore sits at 2275 Soda Canyon Road, above the valley, with a Tuscan-style house and olive trees around the vines. When the Patlands arrived the plantings were Italian. Jay Buoncristiani had them grafted to Malbec. That fruit now goes into this blend and into a 100 percent estate Malbec.
The 2022 Proprietary Red is not a single-vineyard wine. Stagecoach, the largest contiguous mountain planting in Napa, supplies the mountain Cabernet. Oaknoll, the family's Silverado Trail vineyard acquired after the 2017 Atlas Peak fire, adds another Napa voice. Viking is the third source on the 2022 sheet.
Twenty months in French oak, 60 percent new. Harvest chemistry on the house record: 27.6 Brix, 5.98 g/L acidity, pH 3.65. Three hundred eighteen cases. Serve it as the house red, not as a trophy Cabernet.
