Why this bottle belongs on the list

Two selling points.
Then the market.

Selling point 01

Scott Saunders. Fifth-generation Paso native.

Arbuckle Ridge started as a single barrel in 2011, separate from the family Hearst Ranch wines. Scott grew up in these vines. This is the passion project, not the regional bottling.

Selling point 02

Gateway Vineyard. Willow Creek limestone, not east-side plumpness.

High elevation, marine-cooled, calcareous limestone and shale. Eighteen months, 75 percent new French oak. Vinous noted a saline inflection and unexpected freshness. Do not confuse this with a warm-side Paso Cabernet.

Winemaker's corner

Fifth-generation Paso Robles · Arbuckle Ridge · Gateway Vineyard

Scott
Saunders

Scott Saunders is a fifth-generation Paso Robles native. Arbuckle Ridge began as one barrel in 2011, kept apart from the family Hearst Ranch wines so the mountain fruit could speak without a regional blend.

Gateway Vineyard sits in Willow Creek District, where elevation and limestone give Cabernet backbone. The black-and-white label is a rock arch cut into the California coast. That is Gateway, not a generic Paso silhouette.

The 2023 is 100 percent Cabernet Sauvignon from that vineyard. James Suckling 93. Concentrated currant and mountain berry, graphite minerals.

Wine Enthusiast on DAOU Mountain, Paso Robles, September 2023. Paso mountain Cabernet context. This is not Gateway Vineyard and not Scott Saunders.

The vineyard

Gateway.
Willow Creek.
Limestone Cabernet.

Gateway Vineyard sits in Willow Creek District on the west side of Paso Robles. Marine air, elevation, calcareous limestone and shale. That is a different Cabernet from the east-side fruit that made the AVA famous for plumpness.

Arbuckle Ridge is Scott Saunders' label. The 2023 Gateway Cabernet is 100 percent of that vineyard, aged 18 months in French oak, 75 percent new. 14.8 percent alcohol.

Typical retail on this bottle is $88. James Suckling 93. The trade offer is the case at the formula price.

Currant.
Graphite.
Then the salt.

Dark cocoa and cedar next to blackberry and graphite on the nose. Palate explodes with boysenberry, plum, a mineral edge, refreshing acidity, and a finish that keeps going. Medium-bodied, classical mountain fruit. James Suckling: concentrated currant and mountain berry sliced through with graphite-like minerals. Open it a few hours ahead, or give it a full decant.
